Main Features
1. Weldability
Different product uses have different requirements for welding performance. For instance, certain categories of tableware may not necessitate any welding capability, which is also the case for some cookware manufacturers. On the other hand, most products, such as second-class tableware, thermos cups, steel pipes, water heaters, and water dispensers, demand excellent welding performance from the raw materials to ensure durability and usability.
2. Corrosion resistance
A high degree of corrosion resistance is paramount for most stainless steel products, including Class I and II tableware, kitchen utensils, water heaters, and water dispensers. To assess this, some international merchants conduct rigorous corrosion resistance tests. These involve heating the product in a NaCl aqueous solution until boiling, then removing, washing, drying, and weighing it to determine any weight loss indicative of corrosion. Note: During polishing, the Fe content from abrasive cloth or sandpaper can lead to rust spots on the surface, affecting test outcomes.
3. Polishing performance
In the modern manufacturing landscape, stainless steel products are typically polished during their production process, with exceptions like water heater and water dispenser liners. This necessitates superior polishing performance from the raw materials. Key factors influencing this include:
(1) Surface defects of raw materials, such as scratches, pitting, and pickling, can severely impact the final polish quality.
(2) Raw material consistency is crucial. Low material hardness can complicate polishing, resulting in poor BQ properties, while also causing 'orange peel' effects during deep drawing. Conversely, higher hardness tends to enhance BQ properties.
(3) For products involving deep drawing, defects such as small black spots and ridging can emerge where deformation is extensive, impacting the BQ performance.
4. Heat resistance
Heat resistance refers to the ability of stainless steel to retain its superior physical and mechanical properties under high-temperature conditions, making it ideal for a variety of demanding applications.
Influence of carbon: Carbon plays a critical role in stabilizing and expanding the austenite region in austenitic stainless steels. It forms austenite much more effectively than nickel-about 30 times more so. As an interstitial element, carbon significantly enhances the strength of austenitic stainless steel through solid solution strengthening and further improves stress corrosion resistance in highly concentrated chloride environments, such as a 42% MgCl2 boiling solution.
