Carbon steel is a foundational iron-carbon alloy, with a carbon content ranging from 0.0218% to 2.11%. Widely known as carbon steel, it also incorporates trace amounts of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. Remarkably, as carbon content elevates, so do the hardness and strength, although plasticity may decrease, crafting a robust yet less pliable material.
Classification
(1) Based on intended use, carbon steel is elegantly categorized into three main types: carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. Carbon structural steel is further refined into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel, offering tailored solutions for diverse industry needs;
(2) Depending on the smelting process, carbon steel branches into open hearth steel and converter steel, each with distinct metallurgical attributes;
(3) According to the deoxidation method, carbon steel differentiates into boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ), each with unique properties for specific applications;
(4) By carbon content, carbon steel is segmented into low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%), allowing for varying degrees of strength and ductility;
(5) Classifying by steel quality, carbon steel divides into ordinary carbon steel (with higher phosphorus and sulfur), high-quality carbon steel (lower phosphorus and sulfur), advanced high-quality steel, and extra high-quality steel, each offering distinct advantages for precision manufacturing.
Common steel grades and uses:
08F: Known for its low carbon mass fraction, it boasts excellent plasticity and reduced strength, ideal for manufacturing stamping parts like automobile and instrument housings;
20: Offers commendable plasticity and weldability, perfect for components with minimal strength requirements and carburized parts, such as hoods, welded containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears;
45, 40Mn: These steels, after quenching and tempering, deliver exceptional mechanical properties, making them suitable for high-stress mechanical parts such as gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles;
60, 65Mn: Known for their high strength, these steels are ideal for crafting various springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels, offering optimal performance under stress.
T7, T8: Preferred for parts that endure specific impacts and require resilience, including sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors, demonstrating tough yet versatile performance.
T9, T10, T11: Ideal for creating tools demanding high hardness and wear resistance with minimal impact, such as taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades, ensuring durability and precision.
T12, T13: These are crafted into tools that remain unaffected by impact, including files, scrapers, razors, and measuring tools, providing lasting reliability and accuracy.
