As the carbon content in this alloy increases, so does its hardness and strength, while its plasticity decreases, offering a balance of durability and flexibility.
Classification
(1) By purpose, carbon steels are meticulously categorized into carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and versatile free-cutting structural steel. Carbon structural steel further bifurcates into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel, catering to diverse industrial applications.
(2) Regarding smelting methods, carbon steel is divided into open hearth steel and converter steel, each method imparting unique properties to the final product.
(3) Based on deoxidation techniques, carbon steel is classified into boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ), each offering distinct characteristics for tailored applications.
(4) With reference to carbon content, carbon steel is segmented into low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%), meeting varying mechanical and structural demands.
(5) In terms of quality, carbon steel is distinguished as ordinary carbon steel with higher phosphorus and sulfur content, high-quality carbon steel with lower sulfur and phosphorus content, advanced high-quality steel, and extra high-quality steel for superior performance.

08F: Featuring a low carbon mass fraction, this grade exhibits excellent plasticity and moderate strength, making it ideal for crafting stamping parts like automobile and instrument housings.
20: Known for its outstanding plasticity and weldability, this grade finds usage in components with lower strength demands and carburized parts, including hoods, welding containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears.
45, 40Mn: These grades, post quenching and tempering, boast excellent mechanical properties, making them suitable for high-stress mechanical parts such as gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
60, 65Mn: Renowned for high strength, these steel grades are perfect for manufacturing various springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels.
T7, T8: These grades are designed for parts requiring toughness and the ability to absorb impact, such as sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors.
T9, T10, T11: Crafted for tools demanding high hardness and exceptional wear resistance with minimal impact tolerance, these grades are ideal for taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades.
