Classification
(1) Carbon steel, categorized by its purpose, includes three primary types: carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. Carbon structural steel further branches into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel, offering tailored solutions for diverse industrial needs.
(2) Based on smelting methods, carbon steel is classified into open hearth steel and converter steel, each renowned for its unique properties and applications.
(3) The deoxidation method classifies carbon steel into several types: boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ), each with distinct characteristics for specific purposes.
(4) According to carbon content, carbon steel is divided into low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%). Each category delivers varying levels of strength and flexibility to cater to specific requirements.
(5) Steel quality further classifies carbon steel into ordinary carbon steel (higher phosphorus and sulfur content), high-quality carbon steel (lower phosphorus and sulfur content), advanced high-quality steel, and extra high-quality steel, ensuring superior performance and durability.
Common steel grades and uses:
08F: With its low carbon mass fraction, this steel offers excellent plasticity and low strength, making it ideal for stamping parts like automobile and instrument housings.
20: Known for its exceptional plasticity and weldability, this grade is perfect for components with low strength needs and carburized parts, such as hoods, welding containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears.
45, 40Mn: After quenching and tempering, these grades exhibit outstanding mechanical properties, making them suitable for high-stress mechanical parts like gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
