Carbon steel, a robust iron-carbon alloy, contains carbon from 0.0218% to 2.11%-hence the name carbon steel. This versatile material also incorporates trace amounts of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. With increasing carbon content, carbon steel becomes harder and stronger, albeit with reduced plasticity.
Classification
(1) Carbon steel can be categorized by its purpose into three primary types: carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. Carbon structural steel further divides into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel, each with specialized applications.
(2) By smelting method, carbon steel is classified into open hearth steel and converter steel, each offering unique advantages depending on the manufacturing process.
(3) Based on deoxidation methods, carbon steel falls into boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ), each suited for different industrial requirements.
(4) In terms of carbon content, carbon steel is segmented into low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%), providing a spectrum of properties for diverse applications.
(5) Regarding quality, carbon steel is divided into ordinary carbon steel with higher phosphorus and sulfur contents, high-quality carbon steel with reduced impurities, advanced high-quality steel, and extra high-quality steel for superior applications.
Common steel grades and uses:
08F: Characterized by low carbon mass fraction, this grade offers excellent plasticity and is ideally suited for stamping parts such as automotive and instrument housings.
20: This grade boasts good plasticity and weldability, making it perfect for components with minimal strength requirements and carburized parts such as hoods, welding containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears.
45, 40Mn: These grades, known for their outstanding mechanical properties post-quenching and tempering, are indispensable for creating mechanically stressed parts like gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
60, 65Mn: Renowned for high strength, these steels are used in the production of various springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels, catering to rigorous engineering demands.
T7, T8: These grades are perfect for crafting parts that endure moderate impact and require toughness, such as sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors.
T9, T10, T11: Ideal for tools demanding high hardness and wear resistance with minimal impact tolerance, such as taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades.
T12, T13: Perfect for tools that must resist impact, these grades are used in files, scrapers, razors, and measuring tools, ensuring longevity and reliability.
