Carbon steel, an iron-carbon alloy, boasts a carbon content range of 0.0218% to 2.11%, earning it the name carbon steel. It typically includes trace amounts of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. A rise in carbon content enhances the hardness and strength but may reduce the plasticity of the steel.
Classification
(1) By usage, carbon steel is categorized into three types: carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. Carbon structural steel further divides into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel;
(2) By smelting method, it classifies into open hearth steel and converter steel;
(3) By deoxidation method, it divides into boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ);
(4) By carbon content, carbon steel splits into low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%);
(5) By steel quality, it divides into ordinary carbon steel (higher phosphorus and sulfur content), high-quality carbon steel (lower phosphorus and sulfur content), advanced high-quality steel (lower phosphorus and sulfur content), and extra high-quality steel.
Common steel grades and uses:
08F: Featuring a low carbon mass fraction, this steel offers excellent plasticity and low strength, ideal for stamping parts such as automobile and instrument housings;
20: Known for good plasticity and weldability, suitable for low-strength requirements and carburized parts like hoods, welding containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears;
45, 40Mn: After quenching and tempering, these steels exhibit excellent mechanical properties, making them suitable for high-force mechanical parts like gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles;
60, 65Mn: These steels offer high strength, perfect for manufacturing various springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels.
T7, T8: Ideal for parts requiring a balance of impact resistance and toughness, such as sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors.
T9, T10, T11: Specially crafted for tools requiring high hardness and wear resistance with minimal impact, such as taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades.
T12, T13: Designed for impact-resistant tools like files, scrapers, razors, and measuring tools.
