Further, carbon structural steel is specialized into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel, each serving distinct purposes.
(2) Steel, according to its smelting process, is classified into two primary types: open hearth steel and converter steel, each defined by its unique production methodology.
(3) Deoxidation methods further classify steel into boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ), each offering distinct advantages for specific applications.
(4) Based on carbon content, steel is divided into: low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%), each serving particular mechanical needs.
(5) The quality of carbon steel leads to its classification into ordinary carbon steel (higher phosphorus and sulfur content), high-quality carbon steel, advanced high-quality steel (lower phosphorus and sulfur content), and extra high-quality steel, each varying in elemental content for specific industrial requirements.
Common steel grades and uses:
08F: Characterized by its low carbon content, this steel offers good plasticity and low strength, making it ideal for stamping parts such as automobile and instrument housings.
20: Known for its good plasticity and weldability, this steel is perfect for parts with low strength requirements and carburized parts, including hoods, welding containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears.
45, 40Mn: These steels, after quenching and tempering, exhibit impressive mechanical properties, making them suitable for heavily loaded mechanical parts like gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
60, 65Mn steel is distinguished by its high strength,making it perfect for manufacturing various types of springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels.
T7, T8: Ideal for crafting parts that must endure impact while maintaining toughness,such as sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors.
T9, T10, T11: These are crafted for tools demanding high hardness and high wear resistance with minimal impact, including taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades.
T12, T13: Designed for tools that need to resist impact, such as files, scrapers, razors, and precision measuring tools.
Hot rolling is contrasted with cold rolling. While cold rolling occurs below the crystallization temperature, hot rolling takes place above it, affecting the metal's properties significantly.
