Carbon steel, a versatile iron-carbon alloy, boasts a carbon content ranging from 0.0218% to 2.11%. Commonly referred to as carbon steel, it typically includes trace amounts of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. A notable characteristic of carbon steel is that increased carbon content enhances hardness and strength, although it may reduce plasticity.
Classification
(1) By purpose, carbon steel is classified into three main types: carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. Carbon structural steel is further categorized into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel.
(2) Based on smelting methods, carbon steel can be classified as open hearth steel or converter steel.
(3) By deoxidation method, classifications include boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ).
(4) According to carbon content, carbon steel is categorized as low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%).
(5) In terms of quality, carbon steel is divided into ordinary carbon steel (higher phosphorus and sulfur content), high-quality carbon steel (lower phosphorus and sulfur content), advanced high-quality steel, and extra high-quality steel.
Common steel grades and uses:
08F: Low in carbon mass fraction, this steel offers excellent plasticity and lower strength, making it ideal for stamping parts like automobile and instrument housings.
20: This grade is known for good plasticity and weldability, perfect for parts with low strength needs and carburized components. Applications include hoods, welding containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears.
45, 40Mn: After quenching and tempering, these steels exhibit great comprehensive mechanical properties, suitable for high-force mechanical components such as gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
60, 65Mn: With exceptional strength, these steels are utilized in manufacturing various springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels.
T7, T8: Ideal for parts requiring a balance of toughness and impact resistance, such as sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors.
T9, T10, T11: These grades are perfect for tools demanding high hardness and wear resistance with minimal impact exposure, including taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades.
T12, T13: Specially designed for tools exposed to zero impact, such as files, scrapers, razors, and measuring tools.
