Carbon steel, an essential iron-carbon alloy, boasts a carbon content ranging from 0.0218% to 2.11%. Familiarly known as carbon steel, this metal also contains trace amounts of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. As the carbon content increases, so does the metal's hardness and strength, while its plasticity decreases-a testament to the versatile nature of carbon steel.
Classification
(1) Purpose-based categorization allows carbon steel to be sorted into three primary types: carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. Further, carbon structural steel is subdivided into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel.
(2) Smelting methods provide another classification, segregating carbon steel into open hearth steel and converter steel, each with distinct production techniques.
(3) Based on deoxidation methods, carbon steel is classified into boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ), each offering unique qualities.
(4) Carbon content delivers another layer of classification: low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%), each tailored for specific applications.
(5) Quality-centric classification divides carbon steel into ordinary carbon steel (higher phosphorus and sulfur), high-quality carbon steel (lower phosphorus and sulfur), advanced high-quality steel, and extra high-quality steel, catering to diverse industrial needs.
Common Steel Grades and Their Uses:
08F: With a low carbon mass fraction, this grade offers excellent plasticity and low strength, making it ideal for stamping applications, including automotive and instrument housings.
20: Known for its good plasticity and weldability, this steel is perfect for low-strength parts and carburized components, including hoods, welding containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears.
45, 40Mn: After quenching and tempering, these steels exhibit excellent mechanical properties, making them suitable for high-stress mechanical parts, such as gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
60, 65Mn: Renowned for their high strength, these steels are used in manufacturing springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels, where durability is key.
T7, T8: Ideal for parts needing impact resistance and toughness, such as sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors, thanks to their resilience.
T9, T10, T11: Created for tools demanding high hardness and wear resistance with minimal impact, like taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades, ensuring durability and precision.
T12, T13: Perfect for tools requiring immunity to impact, such as files, scrapers, razors, and measuring tools, offering steadfast reliability in various applications.
