Carbon steel, an iron-carbon alloy, boasts a carbon content ranging from 0.0218% to 2.11%, and is commonly referred to as carbon steel. This alloy typically includes trace amounts of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. Notably, as the carbon content increases, the steel's hardness and strength are significantly enhanced, albeit at the expense of reduced plasticity.
Classification
(1) In terms of purpose, carbon steel is categorized into: carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. Delving deeper, carbon structural steel splits into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel.
(2) Based on smelting methods, carbon steel is classified into: open hearth steel and converter steel.
(3) Deoxidation processes further classify carbon steel into: boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (B), and special killed steel (TZ).
(4) Based on carbon content, carbon steel is divided into: low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%).
(5) Quality-wise, carbon steel ranges from ordinary carbon steel, characterized by higher phosphorus and sulfur content, to high-quality and advanced high-quality carbon steels, with progressively lower phosphorus and sulfur content, culminating in extra high-quality steel.
Common steel grades and uses:
08F: Exhibiting a low carbon mass fraction with superior plasticity and lower strength, this grade is apt for stamping parts such as automobile bodies and instrument housings.
20: Known for its excellent plasticity and weldability, this grade is suitable for components with modest strength needs and carburized parts like hoods, welded containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears.
45, 40Mn: When subjected to quenching and tempering, these grades exhibit excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, making them ideal for mechanically demanding parts like gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
60, 65Mn: Renowned for high strength, these grades are utilized in crafting various springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels.
T7, T8: Crafted for parts needing impact resistance and toughness, such as sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors.
T9, T10, T11: Designed for tools demanding high hardness and wear resistance with minimal impact, like taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades.
T12, T13: Specifically for tools that must resist impact, such as files, scrapers, razors, and measuring devices.
