As the carbon content in this steel increases, so does its hardness and strength, although its plasticity diminishes. This fundamental characteristic makes carbon steel a preferred choice for diverse industrial applications.
Classification
(1) Purpose-based classification: Carbon steel is categorized into three primary types-carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. Further, carbon structural steel is divided into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel, each serving distinct functional needs.
(2) Smelting method-based classification: Carbon steel production involves various methods such as the open hearth steel process and converter steel process, each with unique smelting techniques.
(3) Deoxidation method-based classification: This includes boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ), each distinguished by distinct deoxidation processes that influence the steel's final properties.
(4) Carbon content-based classification: Carbon steel is segmented into low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%), each offering unique characteristics and suitability for various applications.
(5) Quality-based classification: Carbon steel is divided into ordinary carbon steel (with higher phosphorus and sulfur content), high-quality carbon steel (characterized by lower phosphorus and sulfur content), advanced high-quality steel, and extra high-quality steel, ensuring a range of options for specific quality requirements.
Common Steel Grades and Their Uses:
08F: This grade, with its low carbon mass fraction, offers excellent plasticity and moderate strength, making it ideal for stamping components such as automobile and instrument housings.
20: Known for its remarkable plasticity and weldability, this steel is perfect for components with low strength demands and carburized parts, including hoods, welding containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears.
45, 40Mn: Post-quenching and tempering, this steel offers outstanding comprehensive mechanical properties, especially suited for high-force mechanical parts like gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
60, 65Mn: With its high strength, this steel is commonly used in manufacturing robust springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels.
T7, T8: Ideal for crafting components that endure certain impacts and require toughness. Great for tools like sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors.
T9, T10, T11: This steel is utilized in creating tools demanding high hardness and excellent wear resistance with minimal impact, such as taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades.
T12, T13: Perfect for manufacturing tools impervious to impacts, including files, scrapers, razors, and measuring tools.
