Carbon steel, known as an iron-carbon alloy, boasts a carbon content ranging from 0.0218% to 2.11%, and is often accompanied by small amounts of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. With a higher carbon content, carbon steel gains remarkable hardness and strength, although it may lose some plasticity. This superb balance of elements makes carbon steel a versatile and essential material in various applications.
Classification
(1) Based on usage, carbon steel is categorized into carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. Furthermore, carbon structural steel branches out into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel, serving diverse industrial needs.
(2) By smelting technique, carbon steel is classified into open hearth steel and converter steel, each boasting distinct attributes and applications.
(3) According to deoxidation methods, there are several types of carbon steel: boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ), each tailored for specific manufacturing processes.
(4) Divided by carbon content, carbon steel ranges from low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%) to medium carbon steel (WC0.25%-0.6%) and high carbon steel (WC>0.6%), offering a spectrum of mechanical properties.
(5) When considering steel quality, carbon steel is classified into ordinary carbon steel, high-quality carbon steel, advanced high-quality steel, and extra high-quality steel, distinguished by varying phosphorus and sulfur content levels.
Common steel grades and uses:
08F: This grade, with its low carbon mass fraction, excels in plasticity and is ideal for crafting stamping parts like automobile and instrument housings.
20: Known for good plasticity and weldability, this steel is used for components with minimal strength requirements, such as car hoods, welding vessels, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears.
45, 40Mn: After quenching and tempering, these grades offer excellent mechanical properties, making them perfect for heavily loaded mechanical parts such as gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
60, 65Mn: With high strength characteristics, these steels are utilized in the production of various springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels.
T7, T8: These grades are crafted for parts that endure certain impacts and demand robustness, such as sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors.
T9, T10, T11: Designed for tools requiring exceptional hardness and wear resistance but minimal impact, such as taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades.
T12, T13: These steels are used in crafting tools meant to withstand impact, including files, scrapers, razors, and measuring devices.
