(1) Classified by purpose, carbon steel branches into carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. The carbon structural steel further splits into engineering construction and machine manufacturing structural steel;
(2) Based on smelting techniques, it includes open hearth steel and converter steel.
(3) Deoxidation methods classify it into boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ);
(4) According to carbon content, carbon steel is categorized as low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%);
(5) Classified by quality, carbon steel includes ordinary carbon steel (higher phosphorus and sulfur content), high-quality carbon steel (lower phosphorus and sulfur content), advanced high-quality steel, and extra high-quality steel.
Common steel grades and uses:
08F: Low carbon content, excellent plasticity, and low strength, ideal for stamping parts such as automobile and instrument housings.
20: Exhibits good plasticity and weldability, suitable for low-strength parts and carburized components like hoods, welding containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and gears.
45, 40Mn: After quenching and tempering, these offer superb mechanical properties, perfect for high-stress mechanical parts like gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
60, 65Mn steel demonstrates remarkable strength,ideal for springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels.
T7, T8: Designed for parts that endure moderate impact while requiring substantial toughness,suitable for sledgehammers, punches, chisels, woodworking tools, and scissors.
T9, T10, T11: Tailored for tools demanding exemplary hardness and wear resistance with minimal impact, ideal for taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades.
