This versatile material typically includes small quantities of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. As the carbon content rises, so does the steel's hardness and strength; however, this increase comes at the expense of plasticity, making it an essential choice for various applications where toughness is paramount.
Classification
(1) Carbon steel can be categorized based on its purpose into three main types: carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel, and free-cutting structural steel. Among these, carbon structural steel is further subdivided into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel, each serving distinct industrial needs.
(2) By smelting method, carbon steel is classified into open hearth steel and converter steel, each with its own unique production techniques and properties.
(3) Based on the deoxidation method, carbon steel is distinguished into boiling steel (F), killed steel (Z), semi-killed steel (b), and special killed steel (TZ), catering to varied manufacturing processes and end-product requirements.
(4) Carbon content further segments carbon steel into low carbon steel (WC ≤ 0.25%), medium carbon steel (WC 0.25%-0.6%), and high carbon steel (WC > 0.6%), each offering a balance of strength, ductility, and cost-efficiency.
(5) Quality-wise, carbon steel is divided into ordinary carbon steel, high-quality carbon steel, and advanced high-quality steel, with each level signifying lower phosphorus and sulfur contents and enhanced performance characteristics, culminating in extra high-quality steel.
Common steel grades and uses:
08F: Known for its low carbon mass fraction, this grade offers excellent plasticity and low strength, ideal for crafting stamping parts like automotive and instrument housings.
20: Featuring good plasticity and weldability, this grade is perfect for components with low strength requirements and carburized parts, including hoods, welding containers, small shafts, nuts, washers, and carburized gears.
45, 40Mn: These grades, when quenched and tempered, exhibit superior mechanical properties, making them suitable for heavily loaded mechanical parts such as gears, connecting rods, and machine tool spindles.
60, 65Mn: Renowned for their high strength, these materials are used in manufacturing various springs, locomotive wheel flanges, and low-speed wheels, where durability is key.
T7, T8: Ideal for parts that endure impact and demand toughness, such as sledgehammers, punches, chisels, and a variety of woodworking tools and scissors.
T9, T10, T11: Designed for tools requiring high hardness and wear resistance with minimal impact, including taps, small drills, dies, and hand saw blades.
T12, T13: Crafted for tools that must withstand no impact, such as files, scrapers, razors, and precision measuring tools, ensuring precise and durable craftsmanship.
